Derek Fried, V.M.D.

Derek Fried was born in The Bronx and raised in Riverdale, New York. After attending The Bronx High School of Science, Derek stayed local for his undergraduate studies at Queens College. In addition to the pre-veterinary science courses, Derek majored in both anthropology and the humanities. Derek continued his education at The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, where he received his V.M.D. in 1995.

After working for a group of veterinarians in Brooklyn for four years, Dr. Fried convinced his partners to help him start The Riverdale Veterinary Group in 1999. It was always Derek's vision to open up a small animal clinic in his home town of Riverdale. RVG has grown into a full service veterinary hospital, open seven days a week, employing about fifteen people.

In his spare time, Dr. Fried enjoys jogging, basketball, exploring our country on motorcycle trips, and playing with his dog "Maggie."


Nancy Gray, V.M.D.

Dr. Nancy Gray was raised in Riverale, attended the Bronx H.S. of Science and received her B.S. degree in Biology from the State University of New York at Binghamton in 1987. After working in biomedical research at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Columbia University for several years, she moved to Philadelphia and received her V.M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1994

Dr. Gray remained in Philadelphia, Pa. and practiced in several small animal hospitals before returning to New York City in 2000. In her spare time she enjoys film, music and reading. She currently lives with her husband and two daughters in Riverdale.


Alanna Toll, V.M.D.

Alanna TollAlanna Toll is originally from the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA where she grew up with three siblings and two Burmese cats.   She attended Barnard College as an undergraduate where she majored in Biology and founded the Pre-Vet Society.  She spent two years doing biomedical research in cancer immunotherapy at University of Pennsylvania before entering the university's veterinary school.   After graduating from veterinary school, she relocated back to New York and completed her internship in small animal medicine and surgery in July 2007 at Fifth Avenue Veterinary Specialists in lower Manhattan.     

In her spare time, Dr. Toll enjoys cooking, visiting museums, reading, and writing, and being a New Yorker!


Jennifer Trujillo, D.V.M.

Jennifer TrujilloDr. Jen Trujillo grew up in Lansing, Michigan with cats, dogs, horses, rabbits, ferrets and guinea pigs. She attended Smith College in Massachusetts where she played soccer and rode for the equestrian team.  During college she also worked with the local animal rescue fostering dogs and cats.  After graduating college with s degree in chemistry she worked in drug development for GlaxoSmithKline in North Carolina.  After 4 years in the corporate world she decided to attend veterinary school at North Carolina State University where she graduated 3rd in her class.  While in veterinary school Jen pursued her interests in research in the field of immunology looking at the biological mechanisms the regulate inflammation in animals.   

Jen and her husband now live in Manhattan with their Rat Terrier, Sassafras.
When she is not at work Jen enjoys spending time with her family, horseback riding, cooking, and rock climbing.
